Re AN UPDATE ON SOUTHERN AZERBAIJANI PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE

We are providing you the translation of a tabular list of some of the Southern Azerbaijani prisoners of conscience, as issued by ASMEK on 16 August 2006. This list is not exhaustive by any means, as there are other lists issued by other sources with some overlaps. We endeavour to provide you an integrated list in time but as for now the following list illustrates the scale of the violation of human rights against Southern Azerbaijanis by the Iranian authorities.

The families of many of these detainees are hardly able to visit them and similar obstructions exist for the lawyers, indeed if they have one. These prisoners of conscience are often tortured and when they are interrogated, lawyers are not allowed to take part. We hope you will use the mandate entrusted upon you to safeguard the human rights of Southern Azerbaijani activists.

We should mention that Mr. Javad Abbasi, the second person listed in the table has just been released on bail.

The Translation of the update on Southern Azerbaijan Political Prisoners issued by ASMEK on 16 August 2006

Still a considerable number of arrested activists of Southern Azerbaijan are in detention and suffer indeterminate outcomes after three months since the mass protests of Southern Azerbaijan , as the pretext for these detentions. Those released have suffered bails and their trials in normally primitive court proceedings are yet to take place. Now we list the name of some of them known to use but let us to mention that those activists numbered 1, 2, 23, 24, 25, 26 and 27 were imprisoned prior to these mass protests. Please help us by sending more accurate data.
