Re                 The Case of Young Engineer: Mr. Elirza Javanbekht

The police continue their brutal repression of raiding houses of innocent Azerbaijanis and arresting them. According to our latest information another victim of this repression is Mr. Elirza Javanbekht, a young engineer from the Southern Azerbaijani city of Urmu . We confirm that his house was raided and has been under detention since then. The source of this information is a letter that we have just received. We provide you its translation, as well as the source document.

This is another typical instance that we are compiling for your immediate attention and for those concerned with human rights. Our latest authenticated information is tantamount to a popular uprise in Southern Azerbaijan and the price for this is extremely high: 20 innocent civilians have paid the ultimate price for their peaceful protests and up to 2000 are detained and many are transferred to Tehran where they are exposed to highly-trained vicious security agents. We trust that you do not regard our innocent victims as statistics and are monitoring the development of the events as they roll out. We kindly request that you and those organisations safeguarding human rights not to continue with this silence. Now their lives can only be saved by the intervention of international organisations. Once again, we request you to come to terms with the gravity of the situation and recognise the direction of these events as they roll out. Now the lives of these innocent youths are in hands of fascists and what are you going to do about it?

P.S. After the compilation of this letter, we have just received the information that Mr Ekber Azad, a prominent leader of the Azerbaijani national movement, has also been arrested. We also enclose the translation of this letter, which seems to have been compiled on the cuff.

Elirza Javanbekht was detained

The young engineer, Elirza Javanbekht Qulunju, a writer, and (Southern) Azerbaijani activist was arrested by security agents in Urmu. There is no reason published or issued for arresting him but this is evidently related to the ongoing unrests in the cities of (Southern) Azerbaijan and also protesting against the insults against the Turks. He was arrested after the twice checking of his house by security agents. It is thought that his summon has now been issued.

Just one year ago, Elirza Javanbekht Qulunju was sentenced for six months for safeguarding human rights and contributing in the Committee for the Defence of Political Prisoners (ASMEK) in Azerbaijan . His sentence was suspended for two years.

It should be mentioned that Engineer Javanbekht comes from a Turkic Sunni community of Urmu.

The Source Letter

عليرضا جوانبخت بازداشت شد

مهندس عليرضا جوانبخت قولونجو، نويسنده و فعال آذربايجاني توسط نيروهاي امنيتي اورميه بازداشت شد. هنوز خبري  از علت دستگيري وي منتشر نشده است اما به نظر مي رسد اين بازداشت در ادامه نا آرامي هاي اخير در شهرهاي آذربايجان و در اعتراض به توهين عليه ترك ها باشد. بازداشت وي پس از دو بار بازرسي از منزل وي صورت مي پذيرد. گفته مي شود حكم جلب وي نيز صادر گشته است.

عليرضا جوانبخت قولونجو يكسال پيش نيز به دليل فعاليت در زمينه حقوق بشر و عضويت در هيات موسس كميته دفاع از زندانيان سياسي آذربايجان (آسمك) به شش ماه حبس محكوم شده بود كه اين محكوميت به مدت دو سال به حالت تعليق در آمده بود.

گفتني است مهندس جوانبخت از ترك هاي سني مذهب اورميه مي باشد.

According to the information received from Tehran , Ekber Azad, a cultural activist of (Southern) Azerbaijan , was arrested evening on 27 May 2006. We gather that he was arrested by Islamic security agents.
